Respect nature and stop trying to control it. "When the hunter goes out into the rain forest..., does he expect to control nature? No. He imagines that nature is beyond him. Beyond his understanding. Beyond his control. Maybe he prays to nature, to the fertility of the forest that provides for him. He prays because he knows he doesn't control it. H's at the mercy of it." (pg. 350) Here Malcolm states that nature is an all comanding force and can not possibly be controled. He is saying that is it wise of the hunter to not try and control nature and to be humble about it. No one in the book realized this but Malcolm. They all tried to control nature and recreate it, but this was bound to fail. That was why the park ultimately was a disaster. This theme reoccurs throughout the book and is stated plainly here. |
You can't rely on too much technology "You may have noticed that we have a minimum of personnel on the island. We can run this resort with a total of twenty people. Of course, we'll have more when we have guests here, but at the moment, there's only twenty. Here's our contrrol room. The entire park is controlled from here." (pg 98) In the book, it showed that everything was automated and could be easily controled by all of the technology on the island. The only bad part about the technology was that if it went out, they were in some serious trouble. Thta was what happened in the middle of the book. From then on, they were trying to get the power back upo and running because they were helpless with out the computers. The animals couldn't be controlled without the fences and nothing could be done with out the computer access to turn it on. Because of this, Jurrasic park was a disaster as soon as the power went off. |
Things that are extinct are dead for a reason. "Look, this island is an attempt to re-create a natural environment from the past. To make an isolated world where extinct creatures roam freely." (pg. 90) "You know, at times like this one feels, well, perhaps extinc animals should be left extinct." (pg. 189) Throughout the book, Hammond was proud of what he had created and insisted that there was nothing wrong with them and every one would love them. Unfortunately, the dinosaurs were brought to a world they had never lived in and reacted badly. They didn't know how to act in this time or what to think of humans. The only thing they knew how to do was eat people. They were only a danger to every one. Dinosaurs had their chance at living long ago and died out. So, know one knew anything about them, never mind had the ability to control them once they were brought back. |
