Dr. Cruz: He was a doctor who cared for Tina at the Clinica Santa Maria. He spoke perfect English and was confident in his work.

Dr. Marty Guitierrez: He was an American field biologist from Yale working in Costa Rica. He was very opinionated and was confused when Tina's information conflicted with his theory of her attacker.

Summary

Mike hears Tina's screaming and found her with a bloody, swelling arm and small bites covered in sticky saliva. He rushes her to the nearest hospital where Dr. Cruz works on her. Dr. Cruz can't identify the lizard from their descriptions and her picture, but Dr. Guitierrez recognizes it as a basilisk lizard. Tina heals and the saliva from her arm is tested. Morris is suspicious of Hammond and concerned about his purchases of amber, an island, and super computers. Gennaro, Hammond's associate, had paid Grant for information about baby dinosaurs until Grant cut the deal short. The EPA wanted to investigate Hammond and InGen because they didn't want another incident like Biosyn's, who had come with a vaccine for rabies and tested it in a potentially dangerous environment.

Malcolm: points out that Jurrasic Park changes Grant's field of work a bit

Ed Regis: gave a quick tour (nothing really special, just pointed out the obvious things)

Dennis Nedry: yawned; bored with the park

Ellie: losing interest

Baby velociraptor: felt uncomfortable when Grant "inspected" her

Regis introduces Tim and Lex to the group. Tim recognizes Grant as the author of one of his favorite books, Lost World of the Dinosaurs. They head to the visitor center and Grant talks to him about his family and his interest in dinosaurs. Regis is angry about having to be the babysitter and the tourguide. He leads them to the control room where the meet John Arnold, the chief engineer, and Robert Muldoon, the park warden. He than leads them to the lab where Henry Wu, the chief geneticist explains how they got the DNA from blood preserved inside mosquitoes trapped in amber. Wu shows them a fragment of the DNA on the computer. Members of the group begin to get bored as they go. They are led throught the fertilization room and then into the hatchery and nursery. Wu explains how the plastic eggs work and they see a baby veloceraptor that Tim plays with. Wu tells them that the dinosaurs can't breed outside that area because they have all been made female in the hatching process.

Wu: explains how they clone the dino DNA

Grant: still kinda awed at actually seeing the dinos he's been studying for years

Regis: ticked that Malcolm keeps trying to explain why Jurassic Park won't work

Ellie: surprised at how fast the raptors are

Tim

Summary

Wu mentions that they have made 15 species, including many of the compys like the specimen found on land. They are good for getting rid of the waste on the island that builds up. He insists that they couldn't be the same thing that attacked the girl on the beach because the dinosaurs have all been engineered to depend on a special nutrient, lysine, which they can only be provided with on the island. Otherwise, they would die within 12 hours. Tim, Malcolm, Grant, and Ellie go to see the veloceraptor pen and are 'hunted' by three raptors that are shocked by the fence while trying to attack. Grant marvels at their speed and coordination.

He shows them how the motion sensors work to count all of the animals and position them on a map. There are several different versions of species, almost like software.  They also have ID images every five minutes to verify that the dinosaurs are all being counted correctly. The computer system is independent and completely secure. Most of the group is convinced it is safe. Malcolm, however, is still convinced that some of the dinosaurs have gotten through the system.

The group arives at the T-rex pen, but neither the adult or the juvenile, who usually hides most of the day anyway, are out. Back in the control room, Hammond is anxious as he waits for his guests' reaction to the T-rex and Muldoon is worried because of the surprises they had with the other dinos. On the tour, a goat is raised into the paddock and an adult T-rex as big as a house comes out to eat it before dragging it away and frightening the majority of the group.

Summary

The land cruisers come a stop at the stegosaurus area and everyone goes out to see Dr. Harding, the vet, and the sick stegosaur. The stegosaurs usually get sick in that area evey six weeks. Ellie deduces that they have gizzard stones to help with digestion. They replace the stones every six weeks, and swallow poisonous West INdian Lilac berries giving them the symprtoms. Grant finds a piece of an egg shell that he recognises as a velociraptor egg.
Chapter 12        Control                pages 160-166
Characters

:
Summary

To prove that the dinosaurs aren't breeding, Hammond and Arnold scan the island and the expected number of dinos came up. Malcolm asks Arnold to make it expect more animals and Arnold ralizes his point as the numbers climb. The sensors stopped counting because there were only thought to be 238, but when it was expected to keep counting; it did, revealing that there were extras of several species. The graphs of heights also pointo to breeding.
Chapter 13       Breeding Sites                pages 167-177

Characters

:

Summary

The eggs that should have hatched, but didn't and the absence of rodents could have been connected to new raptors. They would have eaten eggs and rats. Grant suspects that possible frog DNA blended with the dinosaurs' could be a reason for their breeding. The group leaves the stegosaur, but Gennaro and Ellie stay with Dr. Hrding. The cars come to a stop and the radios no longer work. Lex spots the boat and sees something on it. There are at least two juvenile raptors on the back of it and the boat is heading towards the mainland with them. Nedry disabled all of the phones and there are only 18 hours to contact the boat. Then, the power for everything outside of the buildings goes out. Nedry sneaks into the freezers and collects samples of the embryos. He escapes in one of the jeeps. Muldoon and Arnold alert security to try to find Nedry. Muldoon wants to check the fences, but his jeep is missing.
